YouTube has reportedly rolled out a new update for its Meta Quest app. According to reports, users of mixed reality headsets can now watch YouTube videos in 8K resolution. However, it is said that HDR video does not support 8K and can only be viewed at 4K resolution at most. The feature reportedly rolled out recently with an update to YouTube’s Meta Quest interface app. Notably, the video streaming giant recently said it would start taking appropriate action against third-party apps that block ads.

according to a Report According to Android Central, the latest version 1.54 of the YouTube for Meta Quest app now supports 8K resolution or 7680 × 4320p. The feature was discovered on Meta Quest 3, which was launched in October 2023. Interestingly, the Meta Quest 3 display uses a 4K LCD panel with a resolution of 2064 x 220p per eye. It’s unclear whether viewers will be able to tell the difference in 4K and 8K video quality on mixed reality headsets.

According to the report, users will simply need to use an updated app to get the feature. Once inside the app, they can search for 8K videos within the VR app. According to the report, once you start playing, clicking the settings icon at the bottom of the player will reveal the option to change the quality. Opting for 4320p is said to play videos at 8K resolution.

However, HDR videos on the Quest 3 reportedly don’t yet support 8K quality, so these videos will only be available at 4K resolution. Interestingly, users can also watch 8K 360-degree content as long as the video is of SDR quality.

YouTube has also been aggressively cracking down on third-party apps that block ads. The company in a recent statement said it will start taking appropriate action against such applications that use its API and provide such services as they violate the company’s terms of service. It further warns viewers using these third-party apps that they may experience buffering issues or see the error “The following content is not available on this app” when trying to watch the video.
