OnePlus launches AI eraser tool, joining Google and Samsung in AI competition

On Wednesday (April 3), OnePlus announced the launch of a new AI Eraser feature for its smartphones. This latest photo editing tool lets OnePlus users create perfect images by automatically removing distracting elements from their photos. The launch of the AI ​​Eraser feature, powered by its proprietary large language model, marks the company’s entry into generative artificial intelligence. The brand also plans to launch new AI-driven features later this year. OnePlus’ AI Eraser feature works similarly to Google’s Magic Eraser. Meanwhile, Samsung has launched similar AI editing tools for its Galaxy smartphones.

Powered by the company’s proprietary LLM (Large Language Model), the tool allows users to select and remove unwanted objects from images directly from their photo library. Users can highlight certain objects, such as pedestrians, trash, or imperfections in the image, and the feature will automatically generate a replacement background that blends in with its surroundings while fitting the overall style of the image. This release includes “before” and “after” image samples to demonstrate the new functionality.

OnePlus’ new AI Eraser feature has been confirmed to be gradually rolled out to phones such as OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, OnePlus 11, OnePlus Open and OnePlus Nord CE 4 starting this month.

The release of AI Eraser marks the Chinese smartphone brand’s entry into the field of generative artificial intelligence. “As OnePlus’ first feature based on generative AI technology, AI Eraser represents the first step in our vision to liberate users’ creativity and revolutionize the future of photo editing through AI, allowing users to create stunning photos with just a few taps.
