OpenAI is developing a tool to detect deepfakes and AI-generated images – check details

On social media we see many pictures and videos that are too good to be true or in many cases, shocking. In some instances, we simply pass by an image without knowing that it is a deepfake. In such a situation, many people become victims of fake news and due to many shares, it starts trending. So, to combat deepfakes and misinformation, ChatGept creator OpenAI announced the development of a tool to recognize the authenticity of content and AI-generated images.

OpenAI’s tool for detecting deepfakes and AI-generated images

According to OpenAI blog Post, the company will develop a tool to track and detect artificially generated images. The goal of developing such tools is to educate people about AI-generated content and avoid cases of deepfakes. OpenAI is collaborating with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) committee, which creates clear labels for AI-generated content. OpenAI said, “As generated audiovisual content becomes more common, we believe it will be increasingly important for society as a whole to adopt new technology and standards that enable people to interact online.” Helps understand the tools used to create the materials found.”

The new tool will be integrated with OpenAI’s image generation tool, Dall-E 3. Specifically this tool will provide information related to the origin of an image as well as how the content was developed. Additionally, content created artistically with OpenAI’s tools will also include an invisible tamper-resistant watermark. The tool is expected to provide up to 98 percent accuracy with Dell-e-generated images and 5 to 10 percent accuracy with other image creation tools like MidJourney or Adobe Firefly. Therefore, this tool will not work for other image creation tools, making it less useful. However, this is a first step and reflects the company’s effort to combat deepfakes and misinformation spreading online.

Reportedly, OpenAI has made the tool available to a very limited audience and has invited research labs and research-based journalism nonprofits to test the tool and provide their feedback before a wider rollout. Such AI detection tools could enable individuals to recognize deepfakes originating from politicians and celebrities.
