Haryana bus accident kills 6 students, 3 principals arrested

An investigation is underway into why schools held classes on Eid, a minister said.

The school principal who was killed when a school bus overturned in Mahendragarh, Haryana, killing six children, is one of the three people arrested in connection with the incident. The driver, who is said to be drunk and jumped from the bus before it crashed into a tree, has also been detained along with the secretary of the trust that runs the school.

Officials said 14 students who were hospitalized after the accident have been discharged, but three of them are in critical condition.

The bus carrying students from grades 4 to 10 was on their way to GL Public School when the bus hit a tree and overturned on Thursday. The bus belongs to the school and documents show the bus’s certificate of compliance expired six years ago (2018). A state road transport official has been suspended.

State Education Minister Seema Trikha said an investigation was underway into why schools were closed during the Eid holiday.

“Schools should not be open today. A show-cause notice has been issued and apart from this, we have also obtained self-affidavits from private schools. Schools have to provide an affidavit stating that the transport vehicles they use are compliant with transport rules,” she said.

When asked if the police officials claimed that the bus driver was drunk, the minister said: “If the driver is found to be drunk, the school will be held responsible. In such a case, an FIR will be filed against the driver, the bus owner and the school principal.”
