The Bharatiya Janata Party has begun a massive political push in Sikkim ahead of hotly contested assembly elections as well as the Lok Sabha polls. The manifesto also stated that the party is committed to safeguarding the essence and substance of Article 371F of the Constitution and ensuring that the rights of the people of Sikkim are protected. The party also promised to advocate for the inclusion of Butiya, Lepcha and Limbu languages ​​in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

In March this year, the BJP called off its alliance with the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) and said it would go it alone in this election. The party is contesting 14 of the state’s 32 parliamentary seats.

Highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for the Northeast, Mr. Nadda stressed the BJP’s commitment to ensuring last-mile delivery and connectivity in the region and asked voters to ditch regional parties.

“Enough is enough. You have to join the mainstream, and the mainstream is the BJP,” Mr Nadda told his audience. “The era of regional parties is over. It is time to bid farewell to regional politics and embrace the BJP that promises all-round development. Gone are the days of corruption and divisive politics. The BJP president also pointed out the transformation that has taken place in the Northeast under the BJP rule. He said the region, once synonymous with conflict, was now peaceful and prosperous.

He highlighted achievements such as the signing of 11 peace agreements, the surrender of over 9,000 insurgents, an 82 per cent reduction in violence and major investments totaling Rs 5 billion in various development projects in the region.

Mr. Nadda also took the opportunity to dispel misconceptions about the BJP’s stance on Christianity, citing the party’s governance in Nagaland, where the majority of the population is Christian.

The 32-seat parliamentary vote will be held on April 19 at the same time as the first phase of parliamentary elections.

The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha has announced its candidate for all seats and the sole Lok Sabha member, retaining the sitting MP Indra Hang Subba. The SKM has issued fines to three BJP MLAs who quit the party on March 15.

The Sikkim Democratic Front has announced 26 candidates for the parliamentary elections, 11 of whom are former MPs. Two-time Lok Sabha MP Prem Das Rai has been fielded to contest from the Himalayan state’s lone Lok Sabha seat.
