“I just think our guys care,” Pistons coach Monty Williams said of Detroit’s best win of the season. “We had every excuse — back-to-back games against the best teams in the West — and our guys just competed.”
Duren’s performance included a career-high nine of Detroit’s 15 offensive rebounds. This is the first time the Pistons have gone 20-20 since Andre Drummond’s game on January 31, 2020.
“I still have six assists,” Duren pointed out to the media. “I knew 20-and-20 was definitely going to happen to me at some point. The game slowed down a lot for me.”
The Thunder entered the game with the second-best record in the league and finished as a 12.5-point favorite according to ESPN BET.
Jaden Ivey scored 19 points (6-40) for the Pistons, who played without leading scorer Cade Cunningham. Cunningham) was late due to what the team called “injury management.” Cunningham returns from a knee injury on Saturday.
“We felt like, on back-to-back games, if there was any level of concern, we wouldn’t feel good about putting him out there,” Williams said.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored a Thunder-high 31 points, and Jalen Williams also scored 20 points.
Detroit led 81-67 early in the third quarter, but Gilgeous-Alexander scored seven points down the stretch. The Thunder (32-14) chased the score to 90-86, and then Ivey hit consecutive jump shots, launching a 10-0 climax.
“I think it’s a two-way energy thing,” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. “They played with energy – beat us, played with intensity – and as the game went on, we couldn’t muster the same energy. They clearly deserved to win today.”
The Pistons entered the fourth quarter with a 100-87 lead and continued to hit three-pointers at critical moments. The 16-point victory tied their largest margin of victory this season.
“This is a good playoff team, but we showed a lot of resiliency the whole game,” Ivey said. “That’s what we need to bring every night.”
Neither Gilgeous-Alexander nor Luguentz Dort played in the fourth quarter, and Chet Holmgren played just 2:08.
“There’s always a balance,” Dainio said. “If I thought we had a chance to get back into the game, I would obviously put them in, but as the game goes on, I just don’t feel it. With the schedule we have and the schedule we have, going out of here, I think It’s a smart move.”
The Thunder shot 56.5% in the first half, but still trailed 70-61 at halftime. The Pistons led 9-2 on offensive rebounds and committed just one turnover.
