Woman and first responder hospitalized after ‘dangerous material’ exposure

A woman and four emergency workers are being treated in hospital after being exposed to “hazardous materials.”

Following the report, the woman was taken to University Hospital Croydon she took poison.

Two Metropolitan Police officers and two London Ambulance Service (LAS) staff were exposed to the substance while responding to emergency calls. They are now under observation.

A spokesman for Croydon Health Services NHS Foundation Trust confirmed they were “treating a small number of patients who were exposed to chemicals, including two police officers” following an “isolated incident”.

A LAS spokesman said ambulance crews were dispatched to an address in Thornton Heath at 3.37am on Thursday following reports of an unwell person.

The woman was later “found to be in possession of a potentially harmful substance.” An incident response officer and a hazardous area response team were also dispatched to the incident.

LAS said: “Two staff members who initially treated the patient were treated for exposure to harmful chemicals and are currently being monitored as a precautionary measure.”

A police spokesman added that the LAS contacted the Metropolitan Police 10 minutes after ambulance crews arrived at the Thornton Heath housing estate.

They said: “Officers and London Fire Brigade attended Mayday Hospital and a security cordon and containment was set up while specialist officers carried out inspections of the hospital. [hazardous] Program and safety procedures are enacted. “

No arrests were made, they added.

The incident has been calmed down, the road closure has been lifted and all areas of the hospital have reopened.
