Indian badminton players including PV Sindhu have secured five quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympics, according to the ‘Race to Paris’ ranking list published by the sport’s governing body, Badminton World Federation (BWF). Former world champion PV Sindhu, the 2016 Olympics silver medalist and Tokyo 2020 Olympics bronze medalist, got her quota as she finished 12th in the list published on Tuesday, according to Olympics.com. Players finishing in the top 16 (maximum two per country) of the men’s and women’s ‘Race to Paris’ rankings secured spots for their national teams at the Olympics.

The qualifying period for this prestigious multi-sport event began on May 1 last year and ended on April 28.

A total of 35 shuttlers achieved quota places through this list, which included quota places for continental representation.

HS Prannoy, who finished ninth in the men’s singles competition, and Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen, who finished 13th, secured their quotas for India at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The other two quotas for India came in the doubles competition, with Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy finishing third in the men’s doubles list and Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto finishing 13th in the women’s doubles.

Chirag-Satwik became the first Indian doubles pair to become world number one after winning the gold medal at the Asian Games Hangzhou last year. Ashwini and Crasto captured two Super 100 championship titles, the Abu Dhabi Masters and Guwahati Masters, and finished runner-up at the Syed Modi International BWF Super 300 tournament.

With a total of seven badminton quotas, India can field its joint-largest badminton contingent at the Olympics, having played at the Rio Olympics in 2016 with seven shuttlers.
