Chandigarh University founder and chancellor Satnam Singh Sandhu was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday. The home ministry in a notification nominated Sandhu to the upper house of parliament.
According to the notice, Sandhu was one of the country’s leading educationists and was a farmer’s son. He was also an agriculturalist and struggled for access to education and established the Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) at Randran in Mohali in 2001 and Chandigarh University in 2012, the report added.
He is actively involved in large-scale community activities to improve health and well-being and promotes communal harmony through his two NGOs – Indian Minorities Foundation and New India Development Foundation, the notice said.
In a social media post, Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar welcomed Sandhu’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha.
“His rich work in community service and his passion for education, innovation and learning will be a source of great strength in the House of Commons. I wish him all the best during his term in office.” Danka said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he is happy that the President has nominated Sandu to the Rajya Sabha.
“Satnam Ji is a renowned educationist and social worker who has been serving the people at the grassroots level in different ways. He has been working towards furthering national integration and working with the Indian diaspora,” the Prime Minister said. The Prime Minister wished Sandu “all the best” on his journey to parliament and said he believed his views would enrich the House of Federation’s agenda.
