Brentford vs Everton live: Score and updates from the Premier League

Good afternoon and welcome to our Saturday 5.30pm game between Brentford and Everton at Gtech Community Stadium. The home side have played five games and have six points, results have been mixed and a little deflating after a fine campaign last year. They began the season with a home draw against Palace, then an excellent 3-0 win over local rivals Fulham at Craven Cottage. Then a 2-2 draw with Spurs followed by a 1-0 defeat up in Newcastle. Then a 2-2 draw at home to Bournemouth. So all in all, three home games with three draws…

… but if you had to pick a visiting team to help you get your party started in front of your own fans, why not Everton? The hapless Toffees have picked up where they left off from last year, losing at home to Fulham and Wolves, getting pumped at Villa, losing at home to Arsenal and drawing at Sheffield United. That gives them the princely sum of one point from five games. They are in the relegation places and they’re highly likely to be there or thereabouts in May. They’re third favourites to go down with only Luton and the Blades less fanciable as a Premier League proposition for next term. Sounds about right to me from what I have seen so far this year.

Everton’s record at Brentford is poor: they have played seven times in West London, drawn three and lost four, that would equal the record set by Derby County in 2000-01. Jim Smith’s side eventually managed to secure 17th place and stayed up. That was a heck of a turnaround around from the Rams actually: after 13 games they only had seven points. Anyway.

On the subject of slowe starters, I just the following excellent stat on the BBC: that Sean Dyche has a weirdly terrible record in August and September. A Dyche side has not won in August or September in 14 attempts, when his Burnley outfit beat Norwich. Maybe the big man’s coaching philosophy takes a while to bed in. Or maybe he and his teams prefer the levelling factors of driving rain, cold etc.

Here is Dyche on the season so far: “There is a lot of good in it but the league table doesn’t lie. I can’t change my tune when you’re going well and when you’re not. The underlying story is better than the league table says but at the end of the day we are the only ones that can change that. I am under no illusion we have to change that. Sometimes you want to play well, if you don’t and you win then at this stage you take it.”

So in summary the league table doesn’t lie but in this case it does?

We will have team news and updates from 4.30pm this Saturday afternoon and then kick off is at 5.30pm. I’ll also be blogging the 8pm match, involving Manchester United by the way, so please stick around for that if you can.

Leandro Trossard Breaks Six-Year Premier League Curse As Arsenal Edge Out Everton In 1-0 Victory – News18

Mikel Arteta’s side had to work hard for their first win at Goodison Park since 2017, with Belgian forward Trossard settling a scrappy encounter midway through the second half.

Arsenal finally ended their six-year wait for a Premier League victory at Everton as Leandro Trossard fired the title-chasing Gunners to a 1-0 success on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta’s side had to work hard for their first win at Goodison Park since 2017, with Belgian forward Trossard settling a scrappy encounter midway through the second half.

Arsenal were not at their fluent best but they earned their fourth win in five games this season by matching Everton’s physical approach.

Arteta has warned his players they would only end their Everton curse if they are willing to put their bodies on the line and they rose to that challenge.

After leaving it late to beat Manchester United in their previous game before the international break, this was another tense affair for Arsenal.

But Trossard’s goal lifted unbeaten the north Londoners into fourth place, two points behind leaders Manchester City as they aim to avenge last season’s late collapse in the title race.

Winless Everton remain in the relegation zone as they face up to another relegation battle after narrowly beating the drop in the last two seasons.

Sean Dyche’s team headed into the game on the back of the news that the club is set to have new owners after Farhad Moshiri agreed to sell his 94 percent stake to American investment fund 777 Partners.

The takeover would bring to an end the tumultuous tenure of British-Iranian Moshiri, who first invested in 2016.

Everton’s new owners got an early glimpse into the size of the task facing them as the Toffees suffered a fourth defeat in their opening five league games for the first time since 2005-06.

Arteta, a former Everton midfielder, has no such worries as Arsenal prepare for their return to the Champions League after a six-year absence against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.

The Spaniard was rewarded with a clean-sheet from keeper David Raya, who made his Arsenal debut following his move from Brentford as Aaron Ramsdale dropped to the bench.

Raya was one of two changes, with Fabio Vieira making his first start since April in place of Kai Havertz.

Gabriel Martinelli thought he had given Arsenal the lead their dominance deserved when he slotted home from close-range in the 19th minute, but his effort was disallowed for offside against Eddie Nketiah in the build-up.

Gabriel’s pass had bounced off Everton forward Beto when Nketiah was ruled to be interfering with play, much to Arsenal’s disgust.

Adding insult to injury for Martinelli, the Brazilian forward limped off with a muscle injury soon after that incident.

Arsenal were in such total command that Everton went the first half an hour without a single touch inside the visitors’ penalty area.

Everton appealed in vain for a penalty when Abdoulaye Doucoure broke into the area and went to ground under William Saliba’s challenge.

Ben White’s effort was saved by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford, who produced an even better stop to keep out Marin Odegaard’s rocket soon after half-time.

Everton’s Arnaut Danjuma fired onto the roof of the net from distance, but Arsenal finally made their pressure pay off in the 69th minute.

A flurry of passes opened up the Everton defence and Bukayo Saka deftly clipped the ball into Trossard, who guided a composed finish into the far corner for his first league goal this season.

Efficient Arsenal overcomes Everton with Trossard goal, Chelsea misfires in 0-0 draw at Bournemouth

It wasn’t pretty or exciting on Sunday but Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Everton was just the kind of game that Premier League title challenges can be built on.

Leandro Trossard celebrates after scoring a goal with teammates(AP)

A classy 69th-minute shot by substitute Leandro Trossard sealed the three points and lifted the level of quality against a limited Everton team playing spoiler at home.

A third straight 1-0 loss for Everton at Goodison Park this season suggested its prospective new American owners would be taking on a rather distressed asset on the field.

Arsenal was the only team in action Sunday to score, after Chelsea misfired in a 0-0 draw at Bournemouth.

Trossard entered the game unexpectedly early when Gabriel Martinelli was injured within a minute of play restarting after he thought he had given Arsenal the lead in the 19th. It was ruled out by an offside spotted on video review.

The victory kept Arsenal level with Tottenham and Liverpool, trailing two points behind defending champion Manchester City at the top of the standings.

It was Everton’s first game since the club announced majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri agreed a sale to Miami-based 777 Partners. 777 has stakes in multiple clubs worldwide including Hertha Berlin which, like Everton, was in decline on the field when a majority stake was taken in March. Hertha was relegated and is now in the Bundesliga second tier.

The proposed Everton deal must be referred to the Premier League and British regulator the Financial Conduct Authority.

Everton took more than 70 minutes to force a corner and tried to survive on about 25% possession of the ball throughout.

With just two goals scored in five league games Everton has the worst scoring rate and already is back in the bottom three places where it spent much of last season. Last-place Luton also has scored just twice though in one game fewer than Everton.

It meant debut-making Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya had little to do replacing Aaron Ramsdale, who was rested after starting for England on Tuesday in a 3-1 win over Scotland.

A hectic week for Arsenal sees the club return to the Champions League for the first time in seven seasons on Wednesday, at home to PSV Eindhoven, before hosting Tottenham in the north London derby next Sunday.

CHELSEA MISFIRES

Chelsea is still misfiring in a latest reset with yet more newly acquired players in a $1 billion spending spree and after hiring another highly rated coach since its own American-led takeover last year.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino was missing a full team’s worth of injured players Sunday and filled his substitutes bench with teenagers yet to make their first-team debuts.

Still, his team had enough scoring chances at Bournemouth and twice had shots strike the frame of the goal.

“That is a thing that makes me very, very angry and disappointed because the effort of the team is fantastic,” Pochettino said. “We need, sometimes, this luck or be more clinical in front of goal. Because all the metrics are good.”

The luck was missing when Raheem Sterling’s 51st-minute free kick bounced down from the bar on to the goal line. Though defender Levi Colwill followed up to put the ball in the net, he was ruled offside.

Chelsea now has just one win in five league games and is 14th in the league standings – one place below Manchester United and one above Bournemouth which has yet to win.

It is also two places below where Chelsea finished last season. So there will be no European game in midweek for the team that won Champions League titles in 2012 and ’21, and the Europa League in 2013 and ’19.

Leandro Trossard reveals the Arsenal tactic that ‘exploited’ Everton

Leandro Trossard scored the winner for Arsenal at Everton (Photo: Getty)

Leandro Trossard says Arsenal’s use of short corners was their key tactic in getting of Everton, following their win at Goodison Park.

Arsenal secured a hard-fought three points at Everton on Sunday, with Trossard grabbing the winner with a fine goal.

Goodison Park has long been a hoodoo ground for the Gunners, with no wins there in the Premier League since 2017, with Sean Dyche also proving to be one of Mikel Arteta’s toughest opponents.

But on this occasion they outclassed the Toffees, though one aspect of their game caught the eye, with many of their 11 corners being played short, including the one that lead to the winning goal.

‘They [Everton] have a lot of tall guys and they’re good on set-pieces. We wanted to exploit them. We work hard on everything tactically,’ Trossard told Sky Sports post-match.

‘It’s always nice to help your team, especially with a winning goal. I think it’s a great action. I called B [Bukayo Saka] and he saw me with a perfect lay-off. It went in perfectly and I’m very happy.

‘I’ve been practicing all my life on both feet and you can see it helps you. It’s so helpful if you’re good on both feet – you can go both ways and score off either.

‘We knew [about the poor record at Goodison Park] and we wanted to win the game. It’s always a hard game, they give you a hard time but we defended the box well, got a couple of chances and took one of those chances.’

Arteta echoed his winger’s words, telling BBC Sport: ‘We have to keep finding different weapons to win games. We win a lot of corners and we have to maximise that, for sure.

‘It was a long time without a win here. We played a great game, we didn’t give anything away. We dominated the game and created numerous chances. The score should probably have been bigger.

‘I really enjoyed this. Against Manchester United, I saw my face after and it was a bit of relief. This was enjoyment.

‘The 11 players played really well. We had numerous chances, we were patient and Leandro produced an incredible finish to win the game.’

The result moves Arsenal up to fourth in the league, two points behind leaders Manchester City and unbeaten after five games.

Everton vs Arsenal: Premier League – LIVE!

Arsenal must improve on their poor recent Goodison Park form as they travel to face Everton this afternoon. The Gunners have not won on any of their last five visits to the ground, including defeats in all of the last three campaigns.

Mikel Arteta’s side arrive unbeaten in the Premier League so far this season, a draw with Fulham their only dropped points to date. A thrilling win over Manchester United a fortnight ago saw Arsenal go into the international break on a high, and they will be looking for more of the same here. Bukayo Saka is fit to start, while David Raya makes his debut with Aaron Ramsdale dropped to the bench.

Everton sit in the relegation zone, with only one point from their opening four games. They have managed just two goals in the League this season, both in a draw away to Sheffield United, but a win over the Gunners would help immediately lift the mood. Follow all the action with Standard Sport’s LIVE blog, featuring expert analyis from Simon Collings at the ground.

Simon Collings at Goodison Park

What a scrappy half of football that was – credit to Everton for making it that way.

Arsenal just trying to create that one killer moment.

1694967700

HT: Everton 0-0 Arsenal

And that’s half-time.

Arsenal dominant in terms of possession but they have nothing to show for it.

Everton did not get going at all in the first 25 minutes or so, but they’ve increasingly become a factor.

1694967596

45+3 mins: Saliba down holding his face after Beto tries to hold him off. Referee right there and he’s not interested.

Everton forward did fling an arm back, but not sure he actually caught Saliba in the face. Not great from the Arsenal defender.

1694967504

45+2 mins: Four minutes added on, that’s down to the disallowed goal and Martinelli’s injury.

Everton looking for a late charge, as Gueye bursts down the left wing. His cross falls for McNeil, shot is charged down.

Young into the book, as he slides in from behind on Trossard.

1694967350

44 mins: Long, long spell of Arsenal possession. Everton with everyone deep in their own half, just trying to make it to half-time now.

Zinchenko with a great ball over the top, Vieira brings it down well but his cut-back is a poor one. Had to do better there.

1694967157

41 mins: Nearly brilliant from Arsenal, superb one-two between Odegaard and White. The right-back tries his luck from the edge of the area, straight at Pickford.

The Gunners very much in a match now, after a first 25 minutes that resembled a training session.

1694967046

39 mins: Crowd are getting involved, as the challenges fly in. It’s all getting very scrappy and it’s suiting Everton perfectly.

Rice gives away a needless foul, the hosts can launch this into the box from deep.

Young pings it in from the halfway line near enough, aimed at Onana but he can’t win the header.

1694966937

37 mins: Mykolenko catches Saka late, referee doesn’t give the free-kick but then stops play about 10 seconds later as the Arsenal winger stays down.

Saka fine to continue, it’s just a drop ball. Should really have been a free-kick, there was contact.

1694966833

35 mins: Vieira down holding his face, looks to be in a fair bit of pain.

Got a forearm to the face from Beto, as the pair challenged for the ball. Slight size difference between the two of them…

1694966721

33 mins: Rice has been so impressive in that Arsenal midfield.

Always there when the ball is loose, he’s been able to stop the Everton counters almost by himself.

Everton vs Arsenal live: Latest score and updates from the Premier League

Mikel Arteta made 162 appearances for Everton as a player but is yet to taste victory at Goodison Park since taking over as Arsenal manager in December 2019.

Had the chips fallen differently in those weeks following the sackings of Marco Silva and Unai Emery, Everton could have appointed Arteta and Arsenal Carlo Ancelotti. One wonders whether the Merseyside club regret going for the bigger CV given Arteta’s subsequent work, though he will be thankful to have avoided Everton’s financial quagmire.

In fact, Arsenal have not won at Everton since 2017 when goals from Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette helped them on their way to a stylish 5-2 victory. They have found it difficult to find any passing rhythm on their last two visits, playing in front of Everton and allowing the home side to pounce on mistakes and set-piece opportunities. The 1-0 win in February, Sean Dyche’s first game in charge, was an organisational triumph as Everton stifled Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka while the home team’s midfield trio of Gueye, Onana and Doucoure dominated.

The much-improved Eddie Nketiah had one of his poorer games that day, something which might be on Arteta’s mind as he considers whether to give Gabriel Jesus a first start to the season. Arteta’s team selections are more unpredictable these days as he searches for tactical variety, and there is a need to make full use of the squad in a week which also features a first Champions League game in six years plus a north London derby. There has been plenty of control and well constructed play in Arsenal’s first four league games of the season, but they are not cutting teams apart despite putting 10 points on the board. The scheduling this weekend adds a little extra pressure, with Manchester City’s win at West Ham putting them five points clear.

Everton are still looking for their first win this season, but were unfortunate not to get more from games against Fulham and Sheffield United. Their attacking metrics are more than respectable, and they have not one but two strikers to choose from with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and new signing Beto both available. However, the concern for Everton is that they are yet to play the ‘big six’, Newcastle United or Brighton and have just one point. A proposed takeover would normally give a home crowd a lift, but given the questions surrounding American investment group 777, Goodison could be tense.

If Arsenal are serious about challenging City, it is a game they need to win. Full team news on the way.

6 Brighton & Hove Albion 4 3 0 1 12 6 +6 9

Premier League action is back for Arsenal and they are already motivated after a 3-1 victory against Man United. It was required after a 2-2 draw with Fulham. They have won three out of four games in the Premier League so far and they are ready to compete with Man City for the title. Mikel Arteta’s side showed great character so far and the game against United was a glimpse of their caliber.

The Gunners have just two wins in their last six away encounters in the Premier League. Their record at Goodison Park is concerning as they lost four in the last five matches against Everton. They are fifth in the table going in gameweek 05. They have a busy scheduled lineup as they start the Champions League campaign next week. Victory on the weekend will help them to gain momentum for the UCL tie.

On the other hand, Everton starts the season by entering in relegation zone. The Toffees are sitting in the bottom three with just one point from four games. The 2-2 draw against Sheffield United opened their account in the points table. Meanwhile, the home record might push their limits as they are unbeaten against Arsenal in the last five home games. However, they lost their both games at Goodison Park this season so it would be challenging to extend their winning run against the Gunners.

Around The World: Everton Host Arsenal, Real Madrid Welcome Real Sociedad – News18

Spain:

Real Madrid hosts Real Sociedad with Jude Bellingham leading the Spanish league with five goals since the 20-year-old England midfielder joined the club. Madrid will still be without the injured Vinícius Júnior. Madrid opens its Champions League group stage against Union Berlin on Wednesday at home. Madrid has won all four games it has played and entered the round as the league leader. Sociedad’s Japan forward Takefusa Kubo has scored three goals this campaign. Villarreal’s new coach Jose “Pacheta” Martín debuts at home against Almeria after he replaced the fired Quique Setién. Sevilla hosts Las Palmas whose team had to make the trip from the Canary Islands in two separate flights after the club said 15 players missed the first flight. Osasuna is at Getafe.

England:

Everton, which is set to come under new ownership, has a chance to get out of the relegation zone of the Premier League when it faces undefeated Arsenal at Goodison Park. It’s not an easy task. The Gunners rallied to beat Manchester United 3-1 in their last game. Bournemouth hosts Chelsea in the early game with both clubs struggling so far this season.

Italy:

Roma is still searching for its first win of the season and it hosts newly promoted Empoli, which has lost its opening three matches back in Serie A. Roma has just one point. Roma coach Jose Mourinho confirmed that Romelu Lukaku and Paulo Dybala will both start, with the two strikers playing together for the first time. Promoted Cagliari also has just one point and Claudio Ranieri’s side hosts Udinese. Lecce, which is surprisingly fourth, can move level with second-place Juventus with a win at Monza. Atalanta is a point behind Lecce and visits Fiorentina. Frosinone hosts Sassuolo.

Germany:

Three of the four teams in Bundesliga action haven’t yet won a game this season. Borussia Monchengladbach plays at last-place Darmstadt with both teams winless. Heidenheim, which also has yet to win a league game, hosts midtable Werder Bremen in the day’s other match.

France:

Unbeaten Monaco looks to strengthen its lead with victory at midtable Lorient. Monaco has been scoring freely so far this season under coach Adi Hütter, with 13 goals in the first four matches. Marseille is also unbeaten and can jump to at least second place with a home win against Toulouse at Stade Velodrome, which has been hosting Rugby World Cup matches. Also, struggling Lyon desperately needs a home win against promoted Le Havre.

Everton Football Club sold to American firm 777 Partners

Everton has been sold to Miami based investment firm 777 Partners for an undisclosed sum.

The deal will see 94.1% of the loss-making Premier League club transfer from current owner, British-Iranian businessman Farhad Moshiri, to the American fund.

Everton said they have “secured the complete financing” for the new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock in Liverpool.

The fund has a number of football clubs in its portfolio, including Sevilla, Genoa, Hertha Berlin and Standard Liege.

While the club was not on the marker, Mr Moshiri said, “I have been open about the need to bring in new investment and complete the financing for our iconic new stadiumm which I have predominantly financed to date.

“I have spoken to a number of parties and considered some strong potential opportunities. However, it is through my lengthy discussions with 777 that I believe they are the best partners to take our great club forward”.

There have been reports that 777 Partners have been late in paying £900,000 to business partners at the British Basketball League.

There had been calls for Mr Moshiri to leave. Protests took place before some games at current ground Goodison Park last season calling for the owner and board to go.

The deal is subject to Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) approval as well as oversight from the Premier League and the Football Association.

Latest financial results showed Everton made a £24.5m operating loss in 2022 – their fifth in a row.

The club is battling relegation, which could make the financial situation worse.

Everton will next month face a hearing by an independent Premier League commission for an alleged breach of financial rules.

The alleged breach of the league’s profitability and sustainability rules is in relation to the period ending with the 2021-22 season linked to tax issues around loans for their new stadium.

In a club statement, Everton said they were “disappointed” by the Premier League’s decision.
