Everton have been docked two points by the Premier League for further breaches of its Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

This brings the Merseyside team’s total points deduction this season to 8 points, bringing them closer to the relegation zone.

The club was previously docked 10 points in November for exceeding allowed losses of £19.5m towards the end of the 2021/22 season, but this was reduced to six points on appeal.

They now have 27 points, below Brentford and down to 16th, two points and two places above Nottingham Forest in 17th and Luton in 18th.

The latest points deductions relate to breaches of the PSR towards the end of the 2022/23 season.

Everton were charged in January along with Nottingham Forest, who were also docked four points by the Premier League committee, and have appealed and are awaiting a ruling.

The committee said it was “manifestly unfair” to delay a points penalty against Everton because Nottingham Forest had a points deduction.

Premier League clubs can lose up to £105m over three seasons, but if they exceed that figure they will breach the PSR.

The Premier League said Everton held a three-day hearing last month and put forward a series of mitigating factors after admitting breaches of £16.6m.

The “starting point” for the new deduction is five points, before any mitigating factors are raised.

In response to the points deduction, Everton stated that they intend to appeal against the Premier League Committee’s decision.
