San Francisco:

Electronic Arts said on Wednesday it would cut about 5% of its workforce as the video game and technology industries continue to tighten spending.

Chief Executive Andrew Wilson said in a message to employees posted online that the California company, which develops popular games such as soccer game “FC24,” is also “eliminating” some games and stopping development of others it considers A game that won’t work.

“We are streamlining our operations to provide fans around the world with deeper, more connected experiences that build community, shape culture and grow our fan base,” said Wilson.

“In this time of change, we expect these decisions to impact approximately 5% of our workforce.”

The company’s annual report last year showed it had 13,400 employees, meaning about 670 positions were being cut.

The news comes just a day after Sony said it would cut 8% of its workforce globally, as video game makers find they are not immune to the recent wave of layoffs in the tech industry.

Calling it “sad news,” PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan said Sony’s layoffs will affect 900 employees worldwide and include video game studios.

A separate statement said US studios Insomniac Games and PlayStation-owned Naughty Dog Studios were both hit by layoffs.

Microsoft said in January that it would lay off 1,900 people, or 8% of its workforce, in its gaming division after acquiring Activision Blizzard.

The broader tech industry lost 260,000 jobs last year, according to layoffs.fyi, a California-based website that tracks the industry.

The website shows that 176 companies have cut 45,356 jobs so far this year.
