Gavin Robinson, interim leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), called the allegations against Jeffrey Donaldson a “devastating revelation” that had caused “huge shock”.

But he criticized “some people trying to score cheap political points”.

Mr. Robinson’s comments were as Donaldson Resigned as leader of the Democratic Unionist Party Earlier today he was charged with historic sex crimes.

But Donaldson has not resigned as Lagan Valley MP and Mr Robinson has not ruled out a by-election in the constituency, saying: “What has happened in these days and months is beyond our control”.

He added: “In the wake of such shocking news, there will be people, and there have been people, trying to score cheap political points, trying to engage in conspiracy theories, to enjoy or to manipulate in some way. Such devastating consequences.” A message from those involved.

“That’s not our position. Our position is to recognize that what happened was difficult. We took the right and appropriate steps as a party today.”

Mr Robinson also said the DUP was informed of the allegations against Donaldson late last night and decided at a party meeting this morning to appoint Mr Robinson as interim leader.
