King Charles III made the surprising decision to protect Buckingham Palace with the help of French troops.

The 75-year-old monarch allowed French troops to guard the palace for the first time in history. The surprising decision was made to mark the 120th anniversary of friendly relations between Britain and France.

The French National Gendarmerie will review together with soldiers from the British Army Home Division.

However, they won’t be replacing their British counterparts in Keeping the King. This is a responsibility that only members of the British Armed Forces and Commonwealth Forces can undertake.

Squadron Leader Guillaume Dewilde, who leads the French contingent, said: “I am extremely proud to have been asked to share this moment with our British friends. The ceremony is scheduled for Monday, with the group of soldiers traditionally being replaced by new troops in front of 40 distinguished guests. The military police will be marched in and out of the forecourt of Buckingham Palace by the Grenadier Guards Band, which will also perform the national anthems of both countries and a program of British and French music.
