Chinese court awards man $4,200 in damages for calling disabled wife 'trash'

The court heard Mr Zhao showed no love and concern for his wife.

A Chinese divorce court has ordered a man to pay 30,000 yuan (about 352,000 rupees or $4,200) in compensation to his disabled wife because he called her “trash”.according to South China Morning Post (SCMP)The court described the man, Zhao, as a domestic abuser because he often insulted his wife with the surname Qian. The couple married in 2007 and became parents of two children, but their lives changed in 2015 when Ms. Qian became disabled in a traffic accident.

According to the media report, Mr. Zhao’s attitude towards his wife changed after the car accident. He began to disrespect Ms. Qian, ignoring her and calling her names. When he filed for divorce, Ms. Quan agreed and demanded compensation for damages. During multiple hearings, the court heard that Mr. Zhao showed no love and concern for his wife. When Ms. Qian needed more support due to her disability, he continued to humiliate and oppress her.

The court held that Mr. Zhao caused harm to Ms. Qian. The court ruled that his derogatory behavior towards his wife constituted psychological abuse and the verbal assault constituted domestic violence.

The court ruled that Mr. Zhao should compensate Ms. Qian 30,000 yuan and only pay 40% of the value of the couple’s common property.

The story prompted angry reactions from users on Chinese social media. “No need to shame her. She must have suffered a lot,” one user said. Another netizen said: “This man’s goal has obviously been to divorce her since she became disabled.”

“Don’t you think the punishment is too light?” asked another. “How did she endure years of abuse? Poor woman,” said a fourth user.

It is worth noting that China’s 2016 Anti-Domestic Violence Law stipulates that if an abuser causes serious injury or death to the victim, he may be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
