Google is finally stepping out of its comfort zone to provide consumers with advanced artificial intelligence experiences. With technology advancing, the race for artificial intelligence, and the need to meet consumer demands, Google has announced a major organizational change, merging its hardware and software teams into one. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai’s motivation for the announcement is to provide high-quality services to users and partners, especially in the field of artificial intelligence.

Google reorganizes Android, Chrome and Pixel teams

According to an internal email from Sundar Pichai (via9 to 5), the company announced that it will merge the Google Research and DeepMind teams to use Gemini models to improve its artificial intelligence experience. The merger will be called “Platforms and Devices,” and will include teams from Android, Chrome, Pixel and other services across the company. Pichai said the merger will “bring higher quality products and experiences to our users and partners.” He further added that the move will help the company “enhance the Android and Chrome ecosystems.”

The new combined team will be led by Rick Osterloh, who previously ran Google’s hardware efforts. Hiroshi Lockheimer will be transferred to new projects at Alphabet. Sameer Samat will now lead the Android ecosystem. The Verge reports that the merger was proposed by Osterloh and Lockheimer two years ago. Now Lockheimer says “it feels like the right time” regarding the organizational shift.

How will the merger benefit companies and consumers?

Previously, Google had several different teams building their own AI models. But going forward, all “compute-intensive model building” will be handled by a research lab called DeepMind. This initiative may allow team members to build powerful AI models through effective collaboration and team building.

Google is streamlining its AI efforts with a central team where other teams can easily access AI models to build intuitive and advanced applications. Additionally, by working together, teams will be able to leverage more powerful AI models to deliver new innovations faster.
