Official: 6-year-old boy 'unresponsive' in Borewell, Madhya Pradesh

The child fell into an open well in the village of Manica.

Reva:

A 6-year-old boy was found “unresponsive” on Sunday after falling into an open well in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district after a 40-hour rescue operation, an official said. Efforts were underway to free him.

Rescue teams were providing oxygen to the 70-foot-deep well and digging parallel pits in an effort to find him.

The child fell into an open well while playing near Manika village near the Uttar Pradesh border at around 3 pm on Friday. Officials earlier said he was trapped about 40 feet deep.

“The boy has been found and efforts are on to pull him out of the well. But he is not responding,” Rewa Collector Pratibha Pal told Press Trust of India (PTI) over phone on Sunday.

Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDERF), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the local government were at the scene and made every effort to rescue the boy from the well.

Congress chief minister Mohan Yadav said on Saturday that he was closely monitoring the developments and was in touch with local authorities.

An official said earlier that pits about 35 feet wide were dug on either side of the well through which rescue teams were trying to pull out the boy.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Anil Sankar earlier said oxygen was being supplied to the boy through a pipe.

A team of NDRF came from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, he said, adding that unseasonal rains affected the rescue operations.
