“We are grateful to all the first responders who worked the scene and the prosecutors who went to the scene to lay these charges. We acknowledge the horrific nature of this tragedy and our hearts are heavy with the loss of precious lives. We trust the criminal justice system to address these horrific circumstances. Respond appropriately,” Jackson County Prosecutor Gene Peters Baker said in a statement.

A friend of Ms Thomas’ mother said Ms Thomas’ mental health may have played a role in the tragedy. They described the baby as a “very lively” child who was “smiling all the time.”

Ms. Thomas is being held at the Jackson County Detention Center.
