Jonny Bairstow’s unbeaten century helped Punjab Kings (PBKS) achieve a record target by defeating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Eden Gardens on Saturday. Bairstow, who had a poor start to the campaign, scored 108 runs in just 48 balls as PBKS chased down the target of 262 runs, the highest target in the IPL so far. The visiting team achieved the target with 8 wickets and same number of balls remaining. Despite the heart-breaking defeat to Punjab, KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir looked mostly calm on Friday.

However, there came a moment when Gambhir lost his cool and the incident caught the attention of fans on social media. This incident happened after the last ball of the 14th over of KKR’s innings.

PBKS spinner Rahul Chahar bowled a short ball outside off, which Andre Russell nudged back to cut through cover. However, Ashutosh Sharma dived to stop the ball inside the circle.

Ashutosh bowled the ball sharply to the keeper’s end, but it was slightly wrong as Russell quickly stole the overthrow. However, the on-field umpires refused to give KKR runs from the overthrow and said that they had already called for the end of the over.

This infuriated Gambhir a bit as he decided to attack a match official who was standing near the dugout. KKR captain Shreyas Iyer was also present on the spot.

The argument between Gambhir and the fourth umpire lasted for some time before the former KKR captain walked back.

Meanwhile, Bairstow, who hit nine sixes and eight fours, was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’.

“We started well and that was important. They got off to a flyer themselves, so we knew we had to be ballistic in the powerplay,” Bairstow said after the match.

“When you have to chase 200-plus, you have to take risks in the powerplay. Try to hit as hard as possible,” he said.

Apart from Bairstow, Shashank Singh also impressed with the bat and scored unbeaten 68 runs with the help of eight sixes and two fours in 28 balls.
