Former Indian star reveals “I was thrown out” amid T20 World Cup selection debate cricket news

Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has recalled the time when he was dropped from the team after suffering an injury. Irfan, who made his debut for India in 2003, played 29 Tests, 120 ODIs and 24 T20 matches for the country between 2003 and 2012. However, his career was hampered by repeated knee injuries. While he played his last game for India in 2012, he continued to play in domestic cricket until 2019, hoping to make a comeback someday. However, in January 2020, he decided to announce his retirement from all formats of the game.

Responding to a question on “recent bias”, Irfan criticized former India opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who was the chairman of selectors at the time, for leaving him out of the team after his injury.

“I was part of the Indian team when Srikanth sir was the selector. I got injured and dropped out and never played for India. No, it’s true. And I have no complaints about it. I have your heart in my heart Irfan Pathan, the official TV broadcaster of the IPL and a cricket expert, said in the Star Sports press room show, ‘Ticket to World Cup’ that the mentality was different.

Irfan explained how selectors at that time often ignored a player’s match-winning performances after a bad tour or injury.

The 39-year-old also suggested that selectors should not evaluate a player after just one good season in the IPL.

“But coming to 2020, Wriddhiman Saha was out of the team for more than a year due to injury. What happened when he got fit? He was selected and made a part of the XI. And a year is a long time. But because of what he did for the Indian team before he got injured, we don’t want to give less importance to him, so when someone is sitting in the selection committee, you should not forget what that person has Done for the Indian team before the IPL and it’s not far off what I’m talking about. Just because some people are playing well in the IPL, you think we should pick them but don’t forget those people. (Who have performed well in the past),” he added.
