The international community has lost its “moral compass” over war-torn Gaza, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said on Tuesday.
“The most worrying thing for me is that as humans and as an international community we have lost our moral compass when it comes to Gaza,” Mohammed told a news conference.
“We need to act quickly – we are late,” she added. “Thousands of children continue to lose their lives and even have their limbs amputated. We have hundreds more who are being held hostage waiting to go home.”
According to AFP statistics based on official Israeli data, Hamas agents launched an attack on Israel on October 7, killing 1,170 people, most of them civilians, triggering the Gaza War.
Agents also took more than 250 Israeli and foreign hostages, 129 of whom remain in Gaza and 34 of whom the Israeli army said were dead.
In the six months since, Israeli retaliatory bombings and ground offensives have killed at least 33,175 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry run by Hamas in the besieged Palestinian territory.
Mohammed did not elaborate on the specific measures she called for, but U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged a humanitarian ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas.
