More than 100,000 homes and businesses in Maine and New Hampshire are still without power after a severe nor’easter.

The storm brought strong winds and heavy snow just days before leaving residents in the dark for days.

People face long waits for recovery.

Despite the tireless work of 1,125 line crews and 400 tree removal crews, Maine’s main power company warned that some power may not be restored until early next week. As of early Saturday, there were more than 150,000 outages, mostly in southern Maine. Meanwhile, more than 10,000 New Hampshire homes and businesses continue to suffer power outages.

Central Maine Power spokesman Jonathan Breed reported more than 5,000 incidents of damage that needed to be addressed during the storm, including more than 300 broken utility poles.

This winter and spring have been particularly challenging for Maine, the most forested state in the country. A December storm knocked out power to about 450,000 homes and businesses, and an ice storm last month plunged 200,000 homes into darkness. The latest nor’easter struck Wednesday night and Thursday, leaving more than 300,000 people without power.

Jonathan Breed said climate change could increase the severity and frequency of these storms. “We’re facing these stronger, more frequent storms across the board. We attribute that to climate change,” Breed said.

More than a foot of snow fell in many areas of northern New England. Nearly 700,000 customers in New England were without power at one point, marking the largest April Nor’easter since 2020.
