Ottawa, Canada:
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whose Liberal party is trailing badly in opinion polls, said on Friday he considered quitting his “crazy job” every day but insisted he would stay in office until the next election.
The vote must be held by October 2025, and recent polls suggest the Liberals will be overwhelmed by the centre-right Conservatives. Pollsters say voters are tired of Trudeau, who first took office in November 2015.
“I can’t be who I am and give up the fight at this point,” he told French-language broadcaster Radio-Canada in a lengthy interview.
When asked if he had ever considered quitting, he smiled and replied: “I think about quitting every day. The job I’m doing is crazy and requires personal sacrifice… Of course, it’s very difficult and sometimes very boring.”
Last year, Trudeau and his wife, Sophie, announced they were separating after 18 years of marriage.
The Conservatives say they will scrap the Liberals’ proposed carbon tax, tackle the government’s budget deficit, tackle the housing crisis and crack down on crime.
The carbon tax will be raised again on April 1, and Trudeau reiterated that the government will not heed calls from some premiers to freeze carbon tax increases.
“I didn’t go into politics to be popular, or for personal reasons, but because I wanted to serve and I knew I had something to offer,” he said.
