The U.S. Supreme Court allows Idaho to temporarily ban gender-affirming treatment for transgender minors. A court’s move Monday to block treatment of minors will remain in effect as litigation against the ban continues.

Idaho is now free to enforce its ban on treating minors and can bring felony charges against doctors who ignore it.

The court order applies to everyone except two transgender youths who challenged the ban and their parents.

Justices Ketanji Brown Jackson, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan opposed banning the treatments.

Justices Neil Gorsuch, Samuel A. Alito Jr., Clarence Thomas, Brett M. Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett upheld the ban.

The medical term for a condition receiving gender-affirming care is gender dysphoria. The Mayo Clinic defines gender dysphoria as “feelings of discomfort or distress that may occur in people whose gender identity differs from the sex assigned at birth or the physical characteristics associated with gender.”
