A weapons armorer who loaded a gun for Alec Baldwin and shot a cinematographer on the set of Rust has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of negligent homicide in the October 2021 shooting death of Halyna Hutchins at a ranch on the outskirts of Santa Fe, New Mexico Homicide.
Baldwin, the film’s star and co-producer, pointed a gun at Ms. Hutchins, 42, during rehearsals when the weapon exploded, killing her and injuring director Joel Souza.
The actor pleaded not guilty to manslaughter in January, and attorneys subsequently moved to dismiss the charges, but that motion has not yet been decided. He is currently scheduled to stand trial in July.
A jury convicted Gutierrez-Reed, 26, in March after a two-week trial. On Monday, she was sentenced to up to 18 months “incarceration in the New Mexico Correctional Facility for Women.”
Sentencing her, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer said: “The word remorse is a deep regret that comes from guilt about a past mistake – that was not you.
“I find that your actions amounted to a serious crime of violence and were committed in a physically violent manner. Despite knowing that your actions were likely to cause serious harm, you recklessly discharged your firearm fatally.
“You are the armourer, standing between a safe weapon and a weapon that could kill. You single-handedly turned a safe weapon into a deadly weapon.
“Without you, Ms Hutchins would be alive, the husband would have his partner and the little boy would have his mother.”
Two weeks ago, a judge denied Gutierrez-Reed’s emergency request for a new trial and release, and she was taken back into custody following her guilty verdict. Two weeks later, a sentencing hearing was held.
Baldwin was initially charged in January 2023, but the charges were formally dismissed three months later.
Baldwin was again charged in January after the special prosecutor presented the case to a Santa Fe grand jury after receiving new analysis of the gun.
The indictment charges Baldwin with manslaughter for negligent use of a firearm and with manslaughter “without due care or caution.”
The actor previously said he pulled the hammer but did not pull the trigger before the gun fired.
Baldwin’s attorneys asked the judge to dismiss the charges, accusing prosecutors of “violating nearly every rule in the book” in obtaining the indictment, while prosecutors claimed the motion to dismiss was “foreseeably false, misleading and a dramatic misrepresentation of the facts.” “.
The judge has not yet ruled on the motion.
Rust resumed filming in Montana last year under a deal with cinematographer and widower Matthew Hutchins, who was named executive producer.
