House impeaches Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Mike Johnson | N18V | The U.S. House of Representatives narrowly voted to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, making him the first in nearly 150 years A cabinet member facing impeachment. Many Republicans blame Mr. Mayorkas for the unprecedented influx of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border. The House voted 214-213 to pass the measure after an attempt last week failed. The issue now goes to the Democratic-led Senate, where the bill is likely to fail. President Joe Biden on Tuesday called the vote a “blatantly unconstitutional act.” The vote was largely divided along party lines, with 210 Democrats voting against impeachment along with three Republican representatives: California’s Tom McClintock, Colorado’s Ken Buck and Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin. The three defectors also voted against the first impeachment of Mr. Mayorkas, saying impeaching someone who did not commit a serious crime would weaken the Constitution’s punishments and do nothing to resolve the border crisis.
