Actor and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kangana Ranaut sparked a storm when she mistakenly referred to Subhash Chandra Bose as India’s first prime minister. Ms Ranaut said in a television interview: “Tell me one thing, when we got independence, where did Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, India’s first prime minister, go?”

The freedom fighter, popularly known as Netaji, formed the government of Free India on October 21, 1943 in Singapore. Subhas Chandra Bose declared himself Prime Minister, Head of State and War Minister during World War II.

Captain Dr. Lakshmi Swaminadhan is the minister in charge of women’s organizations. She also commanded the Rani Jhansi Regiment, a women’s brigade that fought for the Indian National Army. The Rani Jhansi regiment is the first female-only combat regiment in Asia.

“Azad Hind Sarkar” declared authority over Indian civilians and military personnel in the country, which was subsequently occupied by the British. They proclaimed their currency, courts, and civil code.

Subhas Chandra Bose’s bold move is also said to have given a major impetus to the freedom struggle against the British.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and several other senior leaders have appreciated the role played by the ‘Ahrar India’ government in providing a vision of a ‘strong, undivided India’.

Prime Minister Modi said at an event to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the free Indian government: “Netaji inspired not only Indians but also all people around the world who struggled for self-determination and freedom.”
