Shivraj Chouhan on BJP's chances, his 18-hour work day and Congress 'rout' in 2024

Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh suffers record defeat, BJP registers record victory and Congress’ last bastion of Chhindwara falls – Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan seems confident about his party’s performance in the upcoming Lok Sabha. election.

He said that the BJP will win all 29 assembly seats in Madhya Pradesh. These include Rajgarh, where Digvijaya Singh contested, and Kamal Nath’s constituency of Chhindwara, where the Congress fielded him son Nakul Nath.

“The palace has been breached and you have to see that Digvijay Singh Ji is going to lose with record votes, his magic is not working there,” Chouhan told NDTV in an exclusive interview.

Regarding Kamal Nath, he said the former chief minister’s “credibility is seriously at stake and many people feel that if he leaves, then we should follow him”. Many of them ended up joining the BJP.

Regarding the newcomers, Chouhan said those who wish to join the “national reconstruction movement” are welcome. He added: “Congressional staff are frustrated because there is nothing left in Congress – no leadership, no policy, no direction.”

Mr. Chouhan was very proud of the BJP’s stellar performance in the assembly elections. Although the four-time chief minister did not get the top job again, he now has his work cut out for him. Mr Chouhan is a star campaigner for the BJP and he knows the state well.

The 64-year-old man went out at 8 a.m. and didn’t come back until 2 p.m. late at night. It’s a difficult ask, but Mr. Chauhan has experience. He addressed more than 160 rallies across the state in about 37 days before the last assembly elections.

His campaign for the Lok Sabha elections was carefully planned to connect with voters at all levels. From bustling city centers to remote villages, he crisscrossed his constituency along with the rest of the state, speaking at public rallies and interacting with locals and listening to their concerns. His presentation skills, combined with a deep understanding of grassroots issues, allow him to resonate with diverse audiences.

As the Lok Sabha elections approach, Mr Chouhan’s campaign resonates with the promise of progress, development and unwavering commitment to the people of Madhya Pradesh.

When asked about the likely outcome of the elections, Mr. Chouhan said that Narendra Modi lives in the hearts of the people of Madhya Pradesh and people not only regard him as a leader but also look at him with reverence and devotion he.

Mr Chouhan said he was not worried about his seat given the “love and blessings” he had received over the past three terms. “The entire Lok Sabha constituency in the state is my family and that’s why I go wherever I go,” he said.

The veteran leader is contesting from Vidisha constituency, which he represented five times before becoming the chief minister in November 2005. Currently, he is the MLA from Budni Assembly seat, located in Vidisha Lok Sabha constituency.

His opponent is Pratap Bhanu Sharma from Congress. On how Mr Sharma had earlier challenged him, Mr Chouhan said, “I respect everyone’s dignity, he has been an MP twice before and I respect him too”.

During his decades-long political career, Mr. Chouhan held various important positions within the Bharatiya Janata Party, including serving as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh for three consecutive terms.
