Congress MP Shashi Tharoor declared assets of over Rs 55 crore in his nomination papers.

Shashi Tharoor, who is hoping to win for the fourth consecutive time from the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat, declared assets of over Rs 55 crore in his nomination papers.

The sitting MP from Thiruvananthapuram has also declared a total income of over Rs 43.2 crore for the financial year 2022-2023.

Giving details of his assets and liabilities in the affidavit filed along with his nomination papers, Mr Tharoor said he owns over Rs 49 crore in immovable properties, including deposits of varying amounts in 19 bank accounts and a Various bonds, letters of credit, mutual funds, among others, he stated in the affidavit.

According to his affidavit, his movable assets also include 534 grams of gold worth Rs 32 lakh and cash of Rs 36,000 in hand.

His real estate worth over Rs 675 crore includes an inherited quarter share of 251 acres of agricultural land in Palakkad, now worth Rs 1.56 lakh, and 10.47 acres of self-acquired land in Thiruvananthapuram, currently worth Rs. Over Rs 620 crore, his residence in the state capital is currently worth around Rs 52 lakh.

The testimony stated that the Congressman owned two cars, a Maruti Ciaz and a Maruti XL6.

Mr. Tharoor, who holds a PhD in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts University, US) and a Doctor of Letters (Hons) in International Affairs from the University of Puget Sound, US, is named as a defendant in nine cases. There are cases across the country.

Most of the FIRs filed against him were for allegedly inciting enmity between different groups and one case in Kerala was for unlawful assembly and rioting.

He is also facing four court cases, two for defamation, one each in Kerala and Delhi and one in Kolkata for allegedly inciting enmity between different groups, the affidavit said.

In 2014, Shashi Tharoor’s declared assets were over Rs 23 crore and in 2019, they were over Rs 35 crore.
