Patna:

Former Bihar MP Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, has filed his nomination as an independent candidate from Puneia after being rejected by the Congress. The move sparked controversy with the Congress, which claimed they would support Punea’s alliance partner Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

In the India Group’s seat-sharing arrangement, the Punea seat was allotted to the RJD, which is contesting 26 of the 40 seats in Bihar, while the Congress is contesting nine seats. Left parties won the remaining five seats.

“I will be with the party till my last breath,” the disgruntled Congress leader said shortly before filing his nomination.

A visibly emotional Pappu Yadav questioned the Congress leadership and lamented that despite expressing his desire to represent Purnaiya, he was repeatedly denied a ticket. He wondered aloud what qualities he lacked to deserve such treatment, especially given his dedication and hard work in the area.

“What am I missing? Why am I being told time and time again to go to Madhepura or Supaul? And even before my party merged with the Congress, I met Lalu Yadav and said I can’t leave Madhepura. Naiya goes anywhere,” Mr Ranjan said through tears.

Pappu Yadav won the Purnea seat thrice in the 1990s. He said many people tried to end his political career but the people of Punea have always supported him.

“Many people are conspiring to end my political career. The people of Punea have always supported Pappu Yadav, transcending caste and creed. I will strengthen the Indian Union… I am determined to make Rahul Gandhi stronger,” he explain.
