chennai:
Three people were killed when the roof of the famous Sekhmet Bar collapsed on busy Chamiers Road in Alwarpet area of Chennai on Thursday.
Investigators said the roof collapsed on the first floor. There are conflicting reports as to what caused the roof to collapse.
Some blamed the ongoing subway construction opposite the bar. “Two people died. They have been identified as workers. Rescue teams are working to see if anyone else is trapped,” state fire chief Abash Kumar told New Delhi TV.
Officials added that “the bar is functioning normally.”
“We are checking whether any major impact operations are being carried out during the construction of the metro rail lines,” Joint Inspector General of Police Prem Anand Sinha said.
Meanwhile, authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the roof collapse. City police have yet to issue a statement.
