A 55-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly strangling her 4-day-old granddaughter last month because she was born with a deformity, police in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, said on Thursday.

Lashkar District Municipal Superintendent of Police (CSP) Ashok Singh Jadaun told PTI that the child was born on March 23.

“The child died four days after birth and after we received a complaint from the child’s mother, we started investigation and sent the body for post-mortem. We received reports today that the cause of death was strangulation,” the CSP said.

“Based on this report and our investigation, we arrested the grandmother of the child. She has been charged with murder,” Ashok Singh Jadan said.
