Republic Day 2024: From Pathan to Padmavat, Bollywood movies that ruled the box office on Republic Day

Republic Day 2024: Every year, on 26 January, the country celebrates Republic Day to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. This important occasion is celebrated with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervor throughout the country. The Republic Day Parade held on Rajpath (now known as Dutta Path) in New Delhi is an important event. Filmmakers often choose to release their films around this time and many of these films have proven successful at the box office.

Ahead of the 75th Republic Day, here is a list of films that released and ruled the box office:

Pathan (2023)

Siddharth Anand co-wrote and directed the action thriller film starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham. ‘Pathan’ also stars Dimple Kapadia and Ashutosh Rana in supporting roles. The film grossed approximately Rs 1,055 crore worldwide and is the highest-grossing Republic Day release of all time.

Chhapaak (2020)

The film is a biographical drama based on the story of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film stars Deepika Padukone in the lead role along with Vikrant Massey and Madhurjit Sarghi. The film grossed over Rs 55.5 crore worldwide.

Uri – The Surgical Strike (2019)

Directed by Aditya Dhar, the film stars Vicky Kaushal, Yami Gautam, Paresh Rawal, Kirti Kulhari and Mohit Raina in lead roles. The film is a fictional depiction of the aftermath of the 2016 Uri attack. Uri grossed approximately Rs 341.75 crore globally.

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019)

It is a historical action drama film based on Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi. It was directed by Krish Jagarlamudi and starred Kangana Ranaut in the lead role. The film grossed over Rs 142 crore globally and was produced by Zee Studios.

Padmavat (2018)

Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film starred Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor. Although the film ran into controversies before its release, it made a stellar global box office collection of around Rs 585 crore.

Raees (2017)

Rahul Dholakia’s film stars Shahrukh Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Mahira Khan. It was co-produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and Excel Entertainment. The film earned around Rs 285 crore worldwide.

Kaabil (2017)

Kabil made the right noise for this story and execution. It was directed by Sanjay Gupta. Hrithik Roshan, Yami Gautam, Ronit Roy and Rohit Roy were part of the film.

Airlift (2016)

The successful thriller film directed by Raja Krishna Menon starred Akshay Kumar and Nimrat Kaur in the lead roles. The film earned around Rs 228 crore worldwide.

Baby (2015)

This multi-starrer film of Neeraj Pandey resides in our hearts without stopping. The film stars Anupam Kher, Rana Daggubati, Danny Denzongpa, Taapsee Pannu, Kay Kay Menon, Mikaal Zulfikar, Madhurima Tuli and Rashid Naaz along with Akshay Kumar.

Jai Ho (2014) – 24 January

Directed by Suhail Khan, the film stars Sana Khan, Suniel Shetty, Salman Khan and Daisy Shaheen. Jai Ho is a remake of the 2006 Telugu film Stalin and has grossed approximately Rs 186.37 crore worldwide.
