England footballer Rachel Daly has announced her retirement from international competition.

Daly played left back during his time with the Lady Lions, helping them make history. Journey to Euro 2022she started every game in the tournament.

It was the first time since 1966 that England’s senior international football team had lifted a major trophy, and the first time the women’s team had won the title.

The versatile player was later used as a forward by England coach Salina Wigman during last year’s World Cup and she again started every game. Including losing to Spain in the final.

The 32-year-old Aston Villa forward made 84 appearances for the England national team, scoring 16 goals.

In a post on X today, Daley wrote: “I’ve wanted nothing more than to play for England forever, but now it’s time for me to hang up my boots on the international stage.

“While today is an extremely difficult day for me, it is also a day of reflection and huge gratitude. It is my greatest honour, to play for and represent England.”

She added: “Winning the European Cup and then reaching the World Cup final changed a lot for me, not just as a footballer but as a person. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to share this journey with so many amazing people .

“I have developed special friendships that will last a lifetime. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to wear the England badge over the past eight years and with great pride.”

In 2016, Daley scored on England’s debut against Serbia.

Her first senior appearance came three years later at the 2019 World Cup in France, where she made five appearances.

Daly’s last appearance for England came as a substitute in Tuesday night’s Euro 2025 qualifier win over the Republic of Ireland.

After Daly announced his retirement, Wigman told England’s website: “Rachel is an incredible part of our story and the history we have made together. It has been a privilege to work with her.”

“I have never worked with such a versatile player who always has a smile on her face, brings energy to the team and strives to do her best for the team.

“Off the pitch, she was always up for a joke or a good conversation. Not only will she be missed by me, but so will all the other staff, players and of course the fans.”
