A 22-year-old man from Pune, who was working as a deck cadet on a commercial ship, went missing while sailing from Indonesia to Singapore, his father said on Sunday.

Pranav Karad, who said he was employed by Wilhelmsen Ship Management India Pvt Ltd for the past six months, has been missing since Friday afternoon.

“The ship was en route from Indonesia to Singapore. On Friday evening, we received a call from the shipping company’s Mumbai office informing us that our son was missing on board. We were informed that a search operation was underway and efforts were underway to find him ,” said Gopal Kalad, Pranav’s father.

“We are trying to seek help from the federal government. We have also contacted the Mumbai and Pune police. Pranav completed a three-year course in marine engineering from a city educational institution,” his father told reporters.

Pune police officials said Pranav’s family had contacted them but they were referred to Mumbai police as the shipping company’s office is in Andheri.
