Prime Minister Modi wins Bhutan's highest civilian award

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday received Bhutan’s highest civilian award, the Order of the Lord Drum Gyalpo, becoming the first foreign head of government to receive the honour.

The award was awarded to Prime Minister Modi in recognition of his “outstanding contribution to the development of India-Bhutan relations and outstanding service to the country and people of Bhutan”.

“It is an honor to be awarded the ‘Dragon Gyalpo Medal’ by Bhutan. I dedicate it to 1.4 billion Indians,” Prime Minister Modi posted on X shortly after.

King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk of Bhutan awarded the “Druk Glyalpo Medal” to Prime Minister Modi.

The honor was announced by the King of Bhutan during the celebration of the 114th National Day on December 17, 2021. Prime Minister Narendra Modi accepted the honor on Friday during a two-day state visit, his third since taking over as Prime Minister in 2014.

A statement issued by the Indian Embassy when announcing the news in 2021 said, “In accordance with the established ranking and priority, the Order of Denlong Gyalpo was established to recognize lifelong achievements and is the pinnacle of the honor system of Bhutan and takes precedence over all orders , orders and medals.”

In 2020, Prime Minister Modi was awarded the “U.S. Government Medal of Merit” by the U.S. Armed Forces; in 2019, Russia awarded Prime Minister Modi the highest civilian honor, the “Order of St. Andrew.”

Earlier in the day, hours after arriving in the Himalayan nation, Prime Minister Modi said he was grateful to the people of Bhutan for the “unforgettable welcome” to their beautiful country and hoped that India-Bhutan friendship “continues to scale new heights” . ”

Prime Minister Modi’s visit is aimed at further cementing India’s unique and enduring relationship with Bhutan as part of the country’s Neighborhood First policy.
