Martin Lewis has warned that Britons face hundreds of pounds in losses if they fail to claim tax relief before the upcoming April deadline.

The money-saving expert said people could claim back tax benefits from up to four years ago and urged them to act quickly before the financial year ends on April 5.

In his latest newsletterMr Lewis said these included the wedding tax allowance, payment protection insurance (PPI) and the flat rate rebate.

He said: “With a number of tax reliefs, you can claim a refund up to four tax years before the current tax year.

“So what this means is that when the new tax year begins on 6 April, we will say goodbye to the 2019/20 tax year.”

Here, we take a look at four tax rebates you may be eligible for before the April deadline:

marriage tax allowance

Mr Lewis said more than two million couples were eligible for the marriage tax allowance but had not applied.

Married couples and civil partners are eligible for this allowance if one of them earns less than the tax-free personal allowance threshold of £12,570.

Non-taxpayers can apply to transfer the 10% tax-free allowance to their spouse, saving £252 each tax year.

Once you sign up, payments are automatically made each year. Those eligible from 2019/20 can backdate to receive a £1,260 benefit.

Payment Protection Insurance (PPI)

The deadline to claw back missold PPI is August 29, 2019, meaning those who received payments within the past four years may be eligible for a refund on overpaid tax.

Affected people can claim by submitting R40 on the HMRC website. It can be completed online or printed and posted to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

Check tax code

The tax code tells the employer which taxes are to be deducted and appears on the pay stub as a series of numbers and letters.

It is the employee’s responsibility to check that their tax laws are correct, not that of HMRC or the employer.

People with incorrect tax codes may pay more than they need and can claim back any overpayment.

An employee’s tax code can be found on the payslip or by logging into their personal tax account on the HMRC website.

Taxpayers have until April 5 to apply for a refund of their 2019/20 tax.

Unified tax refund

People who clean or repair work clothes are eligible for subsidies to cover the cost, even if it’s just a branded T-shirt.

The minimum allowance is £60 per year, which is worth £12 per year for the basic 20% of taxpayers and £24 per year for the upper 40% of taxpayers.

People can apply for grants for the past four years.
