Trinamool Congress president and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has severed all ties with her brother Babun Banerjee after he expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s Howrah pick .

However, this isn’t the first time the siblings have had a public fight.

Earlier, Mamata Banerjee had also scolded her brother for flouting safety rules amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In January 2022, Ms Banerjee publicly scolded her brother for “hanging around at home with a Covid case”. Bangladesh was reporting a surge in infections at the time, with the number of cases exceeding 14,000.

“Charity starts at home,” she said, adding that she was deeply offended that someone in her own family violated safety protocols during the pandemic.

Ms Banerjee said: “We seem to have forgotten that if someone in the family has COVID-19, you can’t continue to move around. Someone in my family did that and I was very angry.”

“My brother’s wife is infected with COVID-19 but my brother Papen is wandering around. I don’t like this. Remember, I am a very vocal person. I have told him not to go anywhere from tomorrow.”

Earlier today, Babun Banerjee made no bones about it when he said there were “many capable candidates in Howrah who were ignored by the party”. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has fielded Prasun Banerjee to defend the seat in the upcoming elections.

Babun Banerjee said: “I am not satisfied with the choice of candidates for the Howrah Lok Sabha seat. Prasun Banerjee was not the right choice. Many capable candidates were ignored .”

“I will contest as an independent from Howrah,” he asserted.

Mamata Banerjee severed all ties with her brother, declaring: “Before every election, he creates problems. I don’t like greedy people. I don’t believe in dynastic politics and I will give him a vote .I decided to sever ties with him.” and sever all ties with him. “

The chief minister also addressed reports that her brother may join the BJP and said: “He can do whatever he wants. The party is supporting its official candidate Prashun Banerjee.”
