TV host Jeremy Kyle is expected to give evidence at the inquest into the death of Steve Dymond, who died shortly after failing a lie detector test on his show in May 2019.

Digger Driver, from Portsmouth, died of a morphine overdose and heart problems seven days after appearing on the show. He was found dead in the bedroom of his home.

The court was told Mr Dymond had considered jumping from a taxi while driving home from filming and felt “life was not worth living”.

Claire Overman, representing Mr Dymond’s brother, Leslie Dymond, and son, Carl Woolley, told the preliminary hearing in Winchester that Leslie Dymond said her brother had told her that the audience “heckled and jeered” at him. .

Video evidence of the programme, which was never aired, showed Mr Kyle calling Mr Dymond a “serial liar”, but Ms Overman said she had claimed he had also called her a “traitor and failure”, confirmed by the footage. were not supported.

Ms Overman said Mr Dymond had told his brother he was “incredibly stressed”, in tears and “on the verge of collapse”.

Neil Sheldon Casey, representing Mr Kyle, said it was a “misleading and inaccurate account” based on rumors and that footage from the show revealed the reality of what happened.

Hampshire coroner Jason Pegg said that Leslie Dymond had been declared medically unfit to take part in a full inquest, but that a written statement would be submitted as evidence and judged on its credibility.

The inquiry will primarily look at the circumstances of Mr Diamond’s life between March 14, 2019 and May 9, 2019, including his involvement with the ITV show, including his personal relationships with Jane Callaghan. Including the breakdown of their relationship.

Mr Pegg said: “This investigation should focus on the death of Steve Dymond, other matters or other systemic issues that may or may not have existed at the time in relation to other production companies or programs on TV.

“The inquiry will focus on the processes in relation to his selection, his attendance for filming and his post-filming care, not other systemic issues.”

Rachel Spearing, who has been appointed as counsel for the inquiry, said that the coroner had ruled that the case would not be “a lengthy investigation into the practices of reality television”.

Ms Spearing said: “This scope will review the deceased’s interactions with her GP and her acceptance of and participation in the Jeremy Kyle Show.

“We will review Mr Dymond’s participation in the show insofar as it is relevant to his mental state, including the lie detector machine and the care provided thereafter and the role of the production company and ITV Is included.”

He said Mr Diamond’s history of mental health issues would also be investigated.

In addition, the inquiry has been given access to footage from a 2022 Channel 4 documentary on Mr Diamond’s death, The Jeremy Kyle Show: Death on Daytime.

Following the death of Mr Dymond, and the deaths of other high-profile TV contestants, including former ITV love island contestants Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis, after media watchdog Ofcom brought in new rules to protect the welfare of people on TV and radio.

The new standards apply to all events using participants from the general public after April 5, 2021.

Following Mr Diamond’s death, ITV bosses permanently canceled The Jeremy Kyle Show. It ran for 17 series and was the channel’s most popular daytime offering.

The full inquest will take place at Winchester Coroner’s Court from Tuesday 3 September to Monday 9 September.
