External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday called on NAM countries to challenge concentrations that undermine their economic security and said the NAM voice is here to stay and grow. In India’s national statement at the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Kampala, Uganda, the External Affairs Minister stressed the need for a reformed UN.
Addressing the summit, Jaishankar said, “NAM has entered its seventh decade. In that period, the world has changed and so have our abilities and confidence. We should be more courageous to demand our rights and insist on our demands. The more we share, collaborate and strengthen each other, the more we will change the world.”
“The voice of the Non-Aligned Movement is going to be heard here. The voice of NAM is here to stay and grow. Let’s send that message today,” he said.
Jaishankar highlighted several concerns being faced by countries belonging to the Non-Aligned Movement such as climate change, the impact of the COVID pandemic, multiple conflicts around the world, as well as debt, inflation and development challenges.

Jaishankar on humanitarian crisis in Gaza
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip requires a permanent solution that provides immediate relief to those most affected. “At the moment, the conflict in Gaza is clearly at the forefront of our minds. This humanitarian crisis requires a lasting solution that brings immediate relief to those most affected,” EAM said in his address at the NAM summit.
“We must also be clear that terrorism and hostage-taking are unacceptable. Additionally, international humanitarian law must always be respected by all states. It is also important that the conflict does not spread within or outside the region.”
He advocated a two-state solution where the Palestinian people could live within secure borders. “Our collective efforts must be focused on making this a reality,” Jaishankar said.
It is noteworthy that more than 24,000 people from the Gaza side have been killed in the war between Israel and Hamas. On the other hand, Israel, which has caused more than 1,400 deaths, is pushing for the release of more than 100 hostages still held by Hamas and continuing attacks on the Gaza Strip.
