Former India batsman Virender Sehwag has expressed concern over the form of experienced spin-bowling all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin in the current season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Ashwin has struggled to take wickets in IPL 2024, taking just two wickets in eight matches, and also conceding more than nine runs per over. Despite his struggles, Ashwin recently claimed that taking wickets in T20 is irrelevant. Responding to his comment, Sehwag criticized Ashwin and said that the experienced player may remain unsold in the next season’s auction.

“It’s like when KL Rahul said strike rate doesn’t matter. Same thing. He said it for batting, Ashwin said it for bowling it doesn’t matter if you take wickets. If His stats are not good, so he might not even be picked in the auction next year. When you pick a bowler, do you expect him to give 25-30 runs or do you expect him to give 25-30 runs? Criticizing Ashwin over his mentality, Sehwag pointed out how his teammates – Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav – are getting selected at regular intervals.

“All his competitors – Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav or anyone else – are taking wickets. He thinks if he bowls off-spin anyone will hit him. That’s why he bowls his carrom ball, that’s why He is not getting any wickets, maybe if he believes in his off-spin or second, he can get more wickets, but that is his mentality, but if I were a mentor or coach of any franchise, So I don’t think that if he doesn’t score runs and take wickets, he won’t get a place in the team.”

Despite Ashwin’s poor form, his franchise RR is on top of the IPL 2024 points table with 16 points from nine matches.
