Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday said “girdawari” has been ordered to assess crop damage caused by hailstorms to compensate affected farmers.

Rains accompanied by hail and strong winds lashed many places in Punjab and Haryana on Friday.

The Chief Minister took stock of crops damaged due to hailstorm at Indri in Karnal on Saturday.

“Officials and all ‘patwari’ have been directed to take inventory of crops and immediately conduct ‘girdawari’ of any damage incurred so that compensation can be provided to farmers at the earliest,” Mr Saini said in the post.

Meanwhile, Haryana Chief Secretary TVSN Prasad directed the deputy commissioner to immediately investigate the hail-damaged crops to ensure timely compensation to the affected farmers.

He emphasized that farmers’ satisfaction is the most important.

According to an official release, the Chief Secretary is reviewing the ongoing Haryana Rabi marketing season along with officials of the DC government, food, civil supplies and consumer affairs departments, representatives of the Food Corporation of India and various other agencies. Mr. Prasad stressed the need to speed up clearance of warehouse stocks and insisted that at least 50% of the stock be transferred to warehouses in time by Sunday evening.

He directed the district council to facilitate dialogue between committee agents and farmers, urging farmers not to transport their crops to mandis to make room for the arrival of wheat.

The Chief Secretary also said that the Ministry of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs has also authorized district authorities to transport crops from mandis to warehouses using vehicles owned by commission agents (Arhatis).

They will be provided with rates approved by the department for leasing such vehicles. He added that this initiative aims to enhance the availability of transportation resources and speed up the adoption process.

He asked the administrative secretaries and district councils and officials involved in Rabi crop procurement to pay the farmers within 72 hours.

Mr. Prasad gave clear instructions to officials that farmers should not face any problem while selling their crops and should ensure payment of crops within the stipulated period under any circumstances.

The Secretary-General mentioned that for the convenience of farmers, the silos have also been turned into purchasing centers, so farmers can sell their crops directly.
