Alphabet Inc’s Google has notified suppliers to start producing Pixel smartphones in India as early as next quarter, Nikkei reported on Thursday, as part of its plan to ship more than 10 million Pixel phones this year.
Google said in October it would start producing smartphones in India, with its flagship Pixel 8 arriving in 2024, as it focused more on the key growth market.
The move will also help Google diversify its supply chain away from China, Nikkei quoted a person with direct knowledge of the matter as saying.
Citing multiple sources, the report said the tech giant will prepare production lines for its high-end Pixel 8 Pro smartphone in the coming weeks and begin production of the phone in the April-June quarter.
The report did not reveal how many phones Google plans to produce in India or whether the phones will be sold or exported there.
Google did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
