2023 marks a major milestone for foldable smartphones, with several new players such as Google and OnePlus entering the space with their own foldable devices.

Google, the creator of Android, is now featuring the Pixel Fold, and the category is set to expand even further as Google rolls out native features specifically designed for the foldable form factor.

Despite this, the Pixel Fold received mixed reviews upon launch. While some praised its compact design, others dismissed it due to its large internal bezels. Still, Google seems committed to polishing the second-generation product, aiming to create a more well-rounded product.

A new report from Android Authority may have just given us our first look at the Google Pixel Fold 2. According to the publication, the new device will feature a narrower display compared to the current Pixel Fold, with the overall internal display aspect ratio resembling a square, reminiscent of the OnePlus Open.

The report adds that this narrow form factor will allow Google to better optimize Android apps, as this has been an issue with the current Pixel Fold and Google had to develop software solutions to run apps in landscape orientation. Therefore, narrower devices will make it easier for companies to release apps without having to worry about optimizing them.

Another notable change is the camera housing on the back. The Pixel Fold 2 may feature a quad-camera setup, with the camera module located on the top left of the back of the device instead of the instantly recognizable Pixel camera bar now. It is likely to consist of a wide-angle lens, an ultra-wide-angle lens, a periscope zoom lens, and a fourth unknown sensor. Android Authority says it could be a far-infrared or time-of-flight (ToF) sensor.

Additionally, the image depicted shows a device that is reportedly in the engineering verification testing phase, suggesting that the design may change before reaching the final product. Therefore, nothing has been finalized at this stage.
