Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday became the fourth AAP member (and the fifth opposition leader) to be jailed in the capital’s Tihar jail as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party clashed with Political tensions between rival Indian blocs are rising days ahead of the 2024 general election. Arvind Kejriwal will be jailed until April 15; the ED, which has had custody of him since his arrest on March 21, is still investigating his role in the alleged scam and said his custody may be needed again in the future.

He will be lodged in Tihar’s second jail, his former deputy Manish Sisodia will be lodged in jail one and former health minister Satyendar Jain will be lodged in jail seven, Sanjay Singh, a member of the Federal Assembly, will be imprisoned in Prison No. 5.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader K Kavitha, who is also the daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, is currently lodged in women’s jail No. 6.

Ms Kavitha was accused of being a member of the “Southern Group”, which paid bribes to the AAP to obtain liquor licenses in the capital.

The days for Mr Kejriwal and other prisoners will begin at sunrise, around 6:30 a.m. at this time of year. Prisoners were given tea and slices of bread for breakfast.

After morning showers, Mr Kejriwal will head to court (if a hearing is scheduled) or sit down for a meeting with his legal team.

Lunch is from 10:30 to 11:00 and includes dal, carrotand five servings of roti or rice.

The prisoners were then locked in their cells from noon to 3 p.m.

They are given a cup of tea and two biscuits at 3:30pm and can meet with their lawyers at 4pm.

An early dinner, the same as lunch, will be served at 5:30 p.m., after which prisoners will be held overnight until 7 p.m.

Mr Kejriwal is allowed to watch television except during scheduled prison activities such as meals and detention periods. Allows for broadcasting of 18 to 20 channels including news, entertainment and sports.

In case of emergencies, doctors and medical staff are on call 24/7; Kejriwal suffers from diabetes and will undergo regular check-ups during his imprisonment.

Mr Kejriwal’s lawyers requested a special diet due to his condition.

The chief minister – who has so far run the Delhi government from the emergency room – can meet the family twice a week. However, their names must appear on a list approved by prison security.

It was also requested that Mr. Kejriwal be provided with copies of Ramayana, Shrimad Bhagvad Gita and “How the Prime Minister Decides” by journalist Neerja Chowdhury.

Why was Arvind Kejriwal arrested?

Mr Kejriwal, who was labeled a key conspirator by the education ministry, was arrested on corruption charges.

ED believes that the now-defunct liquor policy provided high profit margins of 185 per cent to retailers and 12 per cent to wholesalers. Of this, 6 per cent (over Rs 600 crore) was the bribe demanded by Mr Kejriwal and the money was allegedly used to finance the poll campaign.

Mr Kejriwal, his jail colleagues and other senior AAP leaders have denied all allegations; they point out that a two-year investigation has not recovered any cash and accuse the BJP of trying to smear the opposition ahead of the elections “political conspiracy”.

AAP said Kejriwal’s arrest was aimed at disrupting his campaign plans.

The opposition also accuses the BJP of using investigative agencies that report to the centre, such as the education ministry and the Central Bureau of Investigation, to target rival political leaders ahead of the elections.

The BJP has firmly refuted the claims.

Meanwhile, Kejriwal moved the Delhi High Court against his arrest, saying the agency violated fundamental rights. The court issued notice to the ED and the hearing will resume on Wednesday.

Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh and K Kavitha were all arrested in connection with the Delhi liquor policy scam that disrupted AAP and national politics ahead of the elections.

Satyendar Jain was arrested in another money laundering case.

Neither the AAP leader nor Ms Kavitha have been convicted; Mr Kejriwal was sent to jail this morning after 10 days in Enforcement Directorate custody.

A potentially significant issue is whether Arvind Kejriwal – whose AAP is a key member of the Indian bloc’s bid to defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party – will be jailed. Prison No. 2.

This is usually where convicted persons are imprisoned. Prisoners awaiting trial – whether Mr Kejriwal, his colleagues or Ms Kavitha – are usually housed in Jail No. 5.

There are 16 jails in Tihar, housing about 20,000 prisoners.
