Reports of destruction, including bound and rotting bodies, continue to emerge GazaIsraeli troops withdrew from the largest hospital after a two-week assault that left the entire area in ruins.

Israel claimed that Hamas militants used Gaza City’s Shifa hospital as a base to launch attacks on its soldiers, saying it had killed and detained hundreds of “terrorists” and found weapons and intelligence throughout the hospital.

Hamas and doctors at the hospital have both denied that the building was used as a base for attacks, and the United Nations has called for an “independent and credible investigation.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that more than 200 “terrorists” had been killed in the hospital. He said the raid was “to prevent harm to civilians, patients and medical teams”.

“It’s absolutely horrific. Hundreds of people are missing. People are collecting remains and bodies from all over. The whole area is beyond recognition. It’s just a killing fest, nothing more.”

Shifa’s photos showed a heavily damaged building and adjoining facilities in ruins, with bulldozers scooping up piles of dirt. Other photos showed patients lying on stretchers in dark corridors, and witnesses said bodies were scattered around the hospital.

“The troops killed the terrorists in a close encounter and recovered a large number of weapons and intelligence documents throughout the hospital while preventing harm to civilians, patients and medical teams.”

They also claimed to have arrested some 900 suspected militants, including more than 500 Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters, during the raids, and seized more than $3 million in different currencies. These claims have not been independently confirmed.

Israel claims to have evidence that hostages captured during the October 7 attack were being held there, following a previous attack on Shifa early in the conflict.

Israel has also previously claimed the hospital is Hamas’s main headquarters for conducting terror operations through a vast network of underground tunnels. It released videos suggesting tunnels beneath Shifa and weapons found at the site. Some reports and officials have suggested that the bunkers at the site may have been previously built by Israel.

The Health Ministry of Hamas-controlled Gaza said in a statement that Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7 have killed at least 32,782 Palestinians and injured 75,298 others.

Despite calls from the United Nations Security Council for an immediate ceasefire, Israel has continued to launch airstrikes in Gaza, vowing to continue destroying Hamas targets.

On Sunday, Israel launched an airstrike on the Al-Aqsa hospital in Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, targeting the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) group and injuring seven journalists. The Israel Defense Forces attacked a building within the hospital that PIJ allegedly used as a command center.

The Israel Defense Forces claimed that four members of PIJ, which is aligned with Hamas and took part in the October 7 attack, were killed.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization issued an urgent appeal to establish humanitarian corridors to deliver aid after the United Nations warned that 1.5 million people were at risk of famine.
