Elon Musk's X launches 'community notes' feature in India

X will launch the function for users to view community notes in December 2022

Social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) has launched community notes feature in India. This initiative enables users to participate in fact-checking tweets shared by other users and intermediaries on the platform.

X’s community notes handler tweeted: “Welcome new contributors from India. Our first contributors are joining today and we will continue to expand over time. As always, we will monitor quality, To ensure that people from different perspectives find Notes helpful. Currently, Community Notes has contributors in 69 countries around the world, and we are adding more contributors regularly.”

Elon Musk, the owner of X, retweeted the tweet and said: “Community Notes is now active in India!”

What are community notes?

According to X, Community Notes (formerly Birdwatch) aims to combat misinformation by inviting users from diverse backgrounds to contribute as note authors. The platform says it does not endorse any particular viewpoint and instead relies on the collective opinions of contributors to determine the credibility of content.

X said that the effectiveness of community notes depends on the consensus reached by users with different opinions. The platform analyzes past ratings to identify annotations on a website that users find helpful. This increases transparency and accuracy by empowering the community to contribute to the verification process.

Users will now have the opportunity to flag misinformation and provide context for tweets, helping to create a more informed and responsible online environment.

When will community annotations be launched?

X launched the ability for users to view community notes in December 2022, but access was initially limited to postings in a few countries. Over time, the platform has expanded this functionality to include contributors from different countries, with the latest rollout extending to 69 countries. Last year, the company expanded the feature to cover images and videos.

Despite its global expansion, India was one of the last major markets where X introduced community notes.
