U.S. President Joe Biden celebrated Earth Day by announcing $7 billion in federal funding for residential solar projects that will serve more than 900,000 homes in low- and moderate-income communities.

He also reportedly intends to add a New Deal-style green jobs training program for the U.S. Climate Corps Associated Press.

The Environmental Protection Agency is awarding the grants and announced the 60 recipients on Monday. The projects are expected to ultimately reduce emissions, saving households $350 million annually, equivalent to 30 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, according to senior administration officials.

Biden’s latest environmental announcement comes as he works to inspire young voters to campaign for his reelection.

Young people were an important part of a broad but potentially fragile coalition that helped him defeat then-President Donald Trump in 2020.

Senior administration officials say young Americans are enthusiastic about Biden’s climate agenda and want to actually help implement it. Officials say the Climate Corps initiative is one way they can achieve that goal.

Solar energy has the potential to reduce the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels that emit greenhouse gases that contribute to planet warming, and is receiving increasing attention as an important renewable energy source.

Solar energy also improves grid reliability and is clean.
