Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday released two years of his earnings as part of a drive to increase transparency and root out corruption.
Zelensky noted in a post on the presidential website that his income fell in 2021 and 2022, the year Russia invaded Ukraine in late February. This is the first time he has publicly declared his income.
In 2021, the year before the invasion, Zelensky and his family earned 10.8 million hryvnias ($286,168), 12 million hryvnias less than the previous year. The 2021 figure includes proceeds from the sale of $142,000 in government bonds.
In 2022, the income of the Zelensky family fell further to 3.7 million hryvnia, as rental income from real estate owned by him decreased due to the outbreak of war.
As Ukraine attempts to meet strict requirements to join the European Union, Zelensky has called on public officials to disclose their income as part of efforts to increase transparency and eliminate corruption.
Western allies, which provide arms and financial aid, and international institutions such as the International Monetary Fund have also sought assurances about efforts to stamp out corruption.
Ukraine’s National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption, one of several agencies working to expose and eradicate corruption, reopened its register of declared income to the public last month.
