Prosecutors are allowed to question Trump on two decisions, one in a New York civil fraud trial and the other in the E. Jean Carroll defamation case.

However, the court has refused to allow Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg to bring sanctions against Trump stemming from the Hillary Clinton lawsuit in Florida.

Prosecutors had sought to question the Republican nominee’s credibility in front of jurors by questioning him about his other cases.

Trump, 77, has repeatedly claimed he would “absolutely” testify; However, after the new ruling, his legal team will not let him do so.

If Trump testifies, it would be a rare move for a criminal defendant. By law, he is not required to take the stand, and jurors are not allowed to do so against him.

Merchan’s decision is designed to give Trump’s legal team an informed view as it considers whether the former president should take the stand in his own defense.

At Friday’s hearing, Trump’s attorney Emile Bové said it would be too “malicious” to bring forward Carroll’s lawsuit and urged the judge against allowing prosecutors to mention it.
